Desiderata – Hand-Drawn Vintage Sans with Swash Alternates

Desiderata is a hand-drawn display sans by Serg Tortugin of Tortuga Studios. Its slightly imperfect edges and decorative alternates give short lettering a vintage, handcrafted character.

Visual character

The lowercase position contains small-cap forms, creating a compact all-caps appearance with differences in scale. Alternate letters can vary repeated shapes, while swashes add decoration. Use flourishes sparingly and check the full word at its final size.

Best use cases

• Brand badges, product labels and packaging.
• Posters, apparel and short inspirational quotations.
• Book-cover titles and vintage-style signage.

Font pairing ideas

Use a quiet text serif or neutral sans for descriptions and practical details. Desiderata can carry a large name on its own; space around its alternates and swashes will help retain a clear hierarchy.
