The Gotham typeface was created by Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones in the year 2000. It is a sans-serif font that exhibits characteristics of the typographic “geometric” style. Gotham draws inspiration from bold capital letters that emerged outside the traditional typographic conventions in the early 20th century. These bold letterforms were commonly found on lithographed posters, enamel signs, and commercial facades throughout New York City.
Gotham made its debut in the pages of GQ magazine in 2001, but it gained widespread recognition in 2007 when it was adopted by the presidential campaign of Barack Obama. Since then, Gotham has become one of the most popular and influential typefaces of our era. Its versatility and modern aesthetic have contributed to its widespread adoption across various industries and design projects.
Notably, Gotham has earned a place in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, solidifying its status as a timeless and iconic typeface.
